What is the context?
A cataract is the loss of transparency of the lens of the eye due to tissue
breakdown and protein clumping. They are often considered part of the ageing
process. However, they can also be congenital or secondary to other causes
e.g. chronic uveitis, prior intra-ocular surgery such as glaucoma filtration
surgery or vitrectomy, and trauma. Risk factors for cataract include: gender,
diabetes, sunlight, steroids, diet, smoking, and alcohol.
Cataract is a common and important cause of visual impairment in Scotland.
Cataract extraction accounts for a significant proportion of the surgical workload
of most ophthalmologists. It accounts for over 80% of surgical activity within
Hospital Eye Services.
